Southwest Research Institute

Southwest Research Institute® (SwRI®) is an independent, nonprofit, applied research and development organization headquartered in San Antonio, Texas. Situated on more than 1,500 acres, they employ over 3,200 staff members and conduct nearly $915 million in annual research.

SwRI® accelerates process development by expediting the design, construction, and operation of pilot plants for both conventional and innovative processes. Their capabilities span work with a variety of pilot plants, including circulating fluidized beds, fixed bed reactors, and novel thermochemical reactor systems, along with laboratory validation and proof-of-concept experiments. They modify and operate standard refinery pilot plants to produce test quantities of materials, ranging from liters to drums, and conduct process development research and development. They also assist clients in troubleshooting, optimizing, and scaling chemical and petroleum processes. Their services include pyrolysis, gasification, chemical looping, hydrotreating, hydrocracking, and distillation, and they provide independent third-party testing and analysis for the oil and gas industries.
